Department of English

The department of English in FIU has started its journey with four full time faculty members from 2013. The department is committed to provide state-of-the-art facilities to its students and faculty members.

We currently offer a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in English language and literature. At FIU, the BA (Honours) and MA programmes offer a unique blend of literature and language in English. The department represents a broad sampling of British, American, and world literature written and translated in English. At the same time the department focuses on the developments in linguistics and language teaching that provides the opportunity to learn the use and evaluation of current classroom techniques for the teaching of English. Extensive reading and writing, along with discussion and presentation skills are required in virtually all the courses offered by the department. The expectation is that the students will turn to research, apply critical thinking and express themselves in a clear and unique style. The focus on critical reading, analytical reasoning and lucid writing is central to the mission of the department.

It has a multimedia language lab along with a well-stocked library. Students can also read a lot of academic and non academic books from the library in their leisure times which help to enrich their knowledge. The department plays a key role in upholding the values of culture and tradition. We organize a full-range of co-academic and social events throughout the year. One of the major strengths of the Department of English is its faculties. Additionally, the English Department regularly organizes various programmes that directly connect the students to the practical and professional world. We strongly believe, in future our students will be able to secure a respectable place in their profession as well as in the larger sphere of society.
